Laws In Nigeria

Recently, the level of domestic violence has reached such levels that the Nigerian government has stepped in and created laws to limit the abuse (Makama). However, these laws have failed to help mitigate violence. The major laws such as those found in the Criminal Code of Southern Nigeria, a document of the criminal laws for Southern Nigeria, intends to reduce domestic violence.  However, these laws actually discriminate against women. While many of the laws regarding Domestic Violence in Nigeria were created decades ago, they are still in use in Nigeria. As can be supposed, they have not reduced the level of violence against women in Nigeria. Adding on to that, they have not reduced domestic violence and have further promoted gender discrimination.
