"Domestic violence is not physical violence alone. Domestic violence is any behavior the purpose of which is to gain power and control over a spouse, partner, girl/boyfriend or intimate family member."

Domestic Violence In Nigeria

Domestic violence against women in Nigeria stems from unequal power relationships within families, communities and states, where women are raped, battered, trafficked, and murdered.   It begins with forced marriages and continues through a legacy of the “bride price,” the tradition of wives bought and owned by their husbands, after which husbands are granted complete control over their wives.   The abuse Nigerian women face is of such scope that those who fight for their rights find it difficult to advocate for them.
